As Managing Photo Editor, I collaborated with our creative team to completely brand-refresh Psych Central. Together, we built a modern visual identity from the ground up—developing a new logo, color palette, illustration style, and photographic direction. To establish deep reader trust, we prioritized authentic, uncontrived lifestyle imagery alongside original in-house portraiture, anchoring the respected mental health platform in real human connection.
Empathy and destigmatization formed the core of our photo selection process, particularly for sensitive topics like anxiety, depression, and eating disorders. To avoid the tired, clinical clichés common in mental health media, we heavily explored thoughtful conceptual photography. By utilizing creative techniques like intentional blur, surrealism, double exposures, and deliberate color theory, we transformed abstract, difficult emotional states into modern, viscerally resonant visual narratives.
